We have been hearing about the Commonwealth Games 2010 for a long time now. Delhi is the venue and the preparations are on in full swing. Flyovers are being built, low floor buses have been purchased and stadiums are being revamped. All this seems like such a rosy picture - but is it?
Lets go through all the developments individually. In part 1 of this series of articles - Lets start with the roads and flyovers. There seems to be a break neck speed in working on flyovers in Delhi. They seemed to be coming up almost overnight - and the sad part is, the truth is not far from the appearance. Indeed all deadlines have been overstepped, so now they are making things in haste. Will these flyovers last?
Consider the latest flyover that was opened a few days back. The top surface is an uneven concrete with holes. Work still remains to be done on the surface - and it has already been opened to traffic! And all this has not even seen a good rainfall - which in India quite inevitably destroys the newest of roads. That is because government contracted work is not only hap hazard and ill organised - it is too full of corruption to be able to create worthwhile infrastructure. The shining example of Gurgaon is a nightmare now - thanks to the bad roads and near zero civic amenities. BPOs are hesitant to setup offices in Gurgaon any more - thanks to the appalling infrastructure. Delhi has a whole is heading fo the same nightmare as the infrastructure is being built without adequate quality checks. The city is becoming a beautiful house of cards - one nudge and the whole thing will fall to pieces.
The roads in various parts of the city are breaking apart. Some of these roads were built within the last year! Every time a road falls apart the civic authorities pile some bitumen on the holes and run a roller over it. Looks good for a week and then its back to square one. Even in the first week the road feels like a test track for prototype vehicles. There is apparently zero accountability in the contractual work being carried out!
Another amazing phenomenon is the vandalism that happens on newly built roads. Dividers are broken by locals to create “cuts”, for those vehicles which do not want to go ahead and take the next U-turn! The traffic cones installed at the edges of feeders leading to the highway are broken or stolen. Signboards are broken or stolen all the time. People put of their advertisement boards right in front of traffic lights totally obscuring them!
Delhi is preparing for the games all-right - but in the most idiotic fashion possible. Thanks to our corrupt government and civil contractors - the whole process has become a sham. In the following articles of this series, we will see how other preparations are also being done in the most atrocious manner. Do read them to get a better understanding of what lies in wait when you step into the city of Delhi during the Commonwealth Games!
